Television tends to trivialise news

Manipal: Editor-in-chief of Outlook Vinod Mehta on Thursday said that television tended to trivialise news.
He was speaking at a seminar on “Media conscience: changes, challenges and chances” organised here by Manipal Institute of Communication.Journalists should not be cynics. They could never be friends with politicians. “A journalist is in the business of telling the truth. But a politician is giving a spin to the truth or embellishing it or evading it altogether. But if a journalist retains his professionalism, even the politician will treat you with respect,” he said.
Journalists should be ready to take calculated risks. They had to be prepared to offend people who were rich and powerful. “Sometimes, you may have to resign for taking on such people. But if you are a real good professional, you will get a job easily,” he said.
Mr. Mehta said that journalists were not infallible. They too committed mistakes.
But if they made mistakes, they should be upfront and accept them.
