CHENNAI: M. Saravanakumar's strike enabled FCI defeat SBI 1-0 in a St. Joseph's-CFA senior division football league match, here on Thursday. The first half began in sedate fashion with neither team unable to initiate attacks. FCI put its name on the scoring sheet in the 22nd minute after M. Saravanakumar booted home a cross from Lokesh on the right. SBI, which was promoted this year, struggled to retain possession, while its opponent looked for opportunities to extend the lead. FCI approached the second session in a similar vein causing alarm in the SBI half. Lokesh almost made it 2 -0 when he shot one from inside the box. Goalie Udhayakumar put his hand out just in time to fend the ball away to safety. SBI defenders continued to err with some poor clearances, strengthening the rival's march. It had a chance to restore parity after A. Yesurathinam served up a fine cross from the right. However, S. Karthikeyan's header went wide. A dull contest ensued even as FCI kept a grip on its lead. M. Saravanakumar was declared man-of-the-match. Earlier, Rubert's goal helped SDS beat Universal 1 - 0 in a first division league game.
