The news about the device spread, created panic in the area CHENNAI: An unidentified cylindrical object washed ashore in Muttukadu on Thursday morning created panic in the area. Personnel of a bomb detection and disposal squad inspected the object and declared that it was part of a boat's navigation equipment. The red device with three attached fibre tubes and a black bulb attached to the longest tube was found abandoned about 3 km from the Muttukadu bridge by some fishermen, who mistook it as a rocket launcher. A small red light on the device was glowing. The device which had ‘Made in USA' printed on it is suspected to have got entangled in a fishing net and later cut lose with nylon ropes still on it. The news about the device spread and police were alerted around 1 p.m., police sources said. “The bomb detection and disposal squad along with a sniffer dog was rushed to the spot. Inspections proved that the object was a detached section of a navigation equipment of a boat or a ship and it was not an equipment of any suspicious nature,” Sithannan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Adyar told The Hindu. Inspections also revealed a circuit fitted inside the bulb of the device. The bomb squad took away the device for further examination.
