The DAV tradition: A holistic approach

DAV Organisation made a tryst with destiny in 1886 for the spread of education. Since then it has opened schools, colleges and technical institutions in all parts of India, from the metros to the remotest corners of the country. In the wake of the 125th year, the DAV Organisation stands tall as the largest Non Governmental Organization in the field of education with 715 institutions and over one million students in various streams. DAV reaches out to urban, rural and tribal areas, with 70 Institutions of Higher learning- Colleges of Arts, Science, Law, Agriculture, Education, Engineering & Technology; Ayurvedic College & DAV Pharmacy; Dental Colleges; Institutes of Physiotherapy and of Nursing; Vedic Research Institute etc.One of the premier institutions affiliated to Punjab University, DAV College, Abohar, is accredited with B++ grade by NAAC in 2004. Spread over an area of 25 acres, the college, founded in 1960, celebrates its Golden Jubilee this year.

The College offers a wide range of courses and programmes in Under Graduate {B.A., B.Com., B.Sc. (Non-medical), B.Sc. (Medical), B. Sc. (Computer Science), B. Sc. (Agriculture), B. Sc. (Biotechnology)} and Post Graduate levels {M.A. (Political Science, Punjabi, History, Hindi), M. Sc. (Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Math, Information Technology), M. Com. (Commerce) and PGDCA}. The college also offers vocational course in Computer Science and Applications and Business administration at the UG level. College is also running an under graduate programme in Physical Education (B. P. Ed.) recognized by NCTE. 

College Placement Cell operates as a Guidance and Counseling Cell to guide the students about the various competitive examinations in different streams, vacancies in Govt./Non-Govt. sectors as well as the non-conventional career options. Industrial Motivation Training Campaigns were also organized to guide the students about various small scale industries career options and the benefits from various schemes of the Central Government. Majority of the college alumni are well-placed in the All India Services, Provincial Services, Defence Services, Banks, Insurance, Management, Medical, Engineering and Education Sectors. Four gold Medals were received by the students in the 2009-10 university examinations. The well qualified staff members are continuously engaged in higher studies to update their knowledge by learning the latest advancements in their respective fields. They regularly attend Orientation and Refresher Courses under the UGC Scheme. The institution also has a process of self appraisal of teaching faculty. The college has spacious lecture theaters, well-equipped laboratories, e- library, Seminar Hall, Multipurpose Gymnasium, eleven playgrounds, athletic track, Students' Center, First Aid Facility, Computer Center and Guest Houses. EMA (Extra Mural Activities) department has been established to hunt the hidden talent of students in fine arts, dance and music. Students have acted in famous Bollywood Movies like Veer-Zara (Nazuk Kamboj and Renuka Jakhar) and Dev D (Anjum Batra). Recently, Mr. Gaurav Vij (Assistant Prof. in Commerce and a talented dramatist) has been honoured with Best Actor award by Punjabi Sahitya Academy, New Delhi for his performance in one act play “Pyasa Kaan”. The college has created a networking to promote outreach and extension activities catering to social issues and executed through NSS and NCC units. Projects on Physical, Mental and Spiritual Health, Hygiene, National Integration, Indian Culture, Traffic Rules Demographic survey of the villages,Blood Donation Camps, Adult Education etc. are organized regularly.
