BANGALORE: Karnataka's first civil defence office for enrolment of citizens and for spreading awareness of civil defence opened in Bangalore on Friday.

The office, which has come up in a part of the BBMP ward office in Yediyur (Ward no. 167) is the first of its kind in Karnataka and it will cater to the needs of civil defence of Jayanagar and Padmanabhanagar.

The office is fully computerised and has online facilities for registration of members and volunteers. Nearly 100 residents enrolled themselves in the office.

Home Minister R. Ashok, who inaugurated the office, urged people to join civil defence in large numbers. He pointed to the current crisis in Japan in which civil defence personnel were playing an important part in relief and rehabilitation of the earthquake-ravaged country.

The meeting was told that the Department of Civil Defence plans to open such civil defence offices in each of the 198 wards of the BBMP.

Earlier, certificates and commendation letters were given to students of Vijaya College and other institutions.

Deputy Divisional Warden Keshava Kumar N. said the office would cater to all the needs of civil defence in the areas of Jayanagar and Padmanabhanagar. He said this was the first time that the civil defence organisation had got an office from where it could spread its activities.

He said the office could help mobilise people in any emergency, including fire.

Yediyur councillor N.R. Ramesh, and officials of the Department of Civil Defence, Karnataka, were present on the occasion.
