For prosperity:Women devotees offering Pongala at the Sri Chamundi temple at Karikkakam

Thiruvananthapuram: Tens of thousands of women devotees offered Pongala to the presiding deity of the Sri Chamundi temple at Karikkakam on Friday, marking the culmination of the annual festival.

Devotees from far and near took their place on the temple premises and neighbouring area right from early morning to set up hearths.

The Pongala ritual commenced with the temple Tantri Valiyannoor Illath Narayanan Anujan Namboodiripad lighting the ‘pandara aduppu.'

Soon, the fire was passed on to other hearths.

The ritual came to an end with the Tantri sanctifying the Pongala offering with the deity's sword that was brought in a ceremonial procession from the sanctum sanctorum.

This marked the culmination of the week- long Pongala festival.

The hearths stretched from the temple in different directions up to the Kochuveli railway station, the World Market goods yard, Venpalavattom, Anayara and the railway overbridge at Chackai.

Shashi Tharoor MP, M.A. Vahid, MLA, and Mayor K. Chandrika were among those who turned up at the temple to oversee the preparations.
