BJP: Why wasn't a CBI probe ordered?

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday stuck to its position that the government had bribed MPs to win the 2008 trust vote and wanted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to answer why his government had not ordered a CBI enquiry on the report of the Kishore Chandra S. Deo Committee, which went into the matter.

Posing a series of questions to Dr. Singh on his statement in Parliament over the WikiLeaks cables, accessed by The Hindu, Leaders of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley of the BJP maintained that it raised more questions than it answered. They charged that for the government to win over Samajwadi Party members, the CBI changed its affidavit in the Supreme Court in the disproportionate assets case against SP leader Mulayam Sigh.

“This led to the Samajwadi Party reversing its position and announcing support to the UPA [in the July 2008 trust vote].” Attempts were made to lure a number of other Opposition MPs also. “It is now conclusively established that MPs were bribed,” the BJP leaders said.

‘Principal beneficiaries'

The two leaders contended that the Prime Minister and the UPA government were the principal beneficiaries of cross-voting.
