Rural neglect is inhuman: Hegde

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: Karnataka Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde said people in many villages were deprived of potable water, electricity and sanitation.

Many in villages had to walk more than 6 km to fetch a pot of water, Mr. Hegde said, adding that it was “inhuman” to neglect the rural population and to make them suffer.

Urban Migration

Inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Inclusive growth — its relevance to the present scenario' here on Saturday, the Lokayukta chief said comprehensive growth should have been addressed during the 1970s itself.

Since there was no comprehensive development, village residents who were deprived of several basic needs were migrating to urban areas, he noted, pointing out that we may experience the repercussions of this soon.

‘Global disparity'

S. Indumathi, Vice-Chancellor of Davangere University, said in her keynote address that there had been disparity in the distribution of wealth not only in India, but also at the global level.

In the course of a century, the population had increased by more than five times whereas agricultural production had not increased proportionately.

Second term

Shamanur Shivashankarappa, MLA, commended the work done by Mr. Hegde as Lokayukta and expressed the hope that he would continue for a second term.
