KOCHI: K.M. Bahauddin, educationist, author and social reformer, died on Sunday morning. He was 82. Prof. Bahauddin, who had cardiac and pulmonary problems, had been admitted in a hospital here before being shifted to a hospital at Thiruvananthapuram a day before. He had lived in Kochi for the past quarter century. Prof. Bahauddin, who took a master's degree in engineering from University of Manchester, had been a professor and later the principal at NIT-C (formerly Regional Engineering College) before taking over as pro-vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He was member of the U.R. Ananthamurthy Commission on education appointed by the Kerala government. The books he authored included ‘Kerala Muslims: History of their Struggle' (both in English and Malayalam) which traced the history of the Muslim resistance to Portuguese and British colonialists; and two books in Malayalam on Kerala's social structure and the Iraq war. He was a founding member of the Muslim Education Society; Muslim Service Society; Centre for Information and Guidance India (CIGI); P.M. Foundation and the Forum for Faith and Fraternity. Rajan case Prof. Bahauddin was the Principal of the then REC when, during the Emergency, his student Rajan was picked up by the police and was allegedly tortured to death. His fearless testimony about the event, appreciated by the High Court, was crucial in forming the court's verdict which later led to Mr. Karunakaran's resignation as Chief Minister. Prof. Bahauddin was buried at his home village at Paravur in Kollam in the afternoon. He leaves behind wife Ramla, a son and three daughters.
