‘Trinamool not capable of bringing positive change'

Staff Reporter

KOLKATA: Questioning the kind of “change” the Trinamool Congress is capable of bringing about in West Bengal, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee appealed to the voters here on Sunday to contemplate whether the Opposition will better the situation in the State when they cast their votes in the upcoming Assembly elections.

“Do you think this party [the Trinamool] will be able to do any good? Can they provide better education facilities than us? Can they perform better in providing jobs? If you want change, let it be for better and not worse,” he said at a rally in his own constituency of Jadavpur.

Mr. Bhattacharjee said that wherever the people in West Bengal had opted for a change, it had shown disastrous results, citing the examples of the governance of the zila parishads of the South 24 Parganas and the Purba Medinipur districts, that are controlled by the Trinamool and “are the worst performers” among all districts.

“If they [the Trinamool] comes to power, the fate of the State will be the same as that of the Railways,” Mr. Bhattacharjee said, adding that promises made by Railway Minister and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee in last year's Budget are yet to be implemented even as the funds have all dried up.

Listing achievements of the Left Front government, Mr. Bhattacharjee said: “We are aware of what we have not been able to achieve in the fields of the ration system, education, health and employment for the youth.”

He said that if returned to power, the Left Front will provide health insurance for everyone in a bid to reduce the cost of treatment for the poor. The Chief Minister also said that Left parties were winning back the support of some of the people, who had shifted away from them in some of the recent elections, because “some of our leaders had become hot-headed and some of our workers behaved poorly with the people.”
