Dr. B.V. Keskar, Union Minister for information and Broadcasting, in a message to the United News of India, a new news agency, which began its service on March 22, says: “I am glad to note that the United News of India is beginning the service. The Agency has been founded with the co-operation of some of the leading newspapers of the country, and is organised in a sound and business-like manner. There is need in this country for competent news agencies which will furnish news in an objective and authentic manner to all its subscribing newspapers. I find that the United News of India is trying to establish itself on a sound and desirable foundation. I hope it will expand and it will be able to establish itself on a firm basis and will keep to the high traditions of journalism and earn a name for itself.” Since October 1958, when one of the two established news agencies of India went out of business, the newspapers of India have felt the need for another news agency which could give both Indian and foreign news. To start with, this agency, the UNI, will issue the world service of the Associated Press of America.
