Call to halt exploitation of groundwater in Ooty

Vow to save water:Students observing World Water Day at the Crescent School in Ooty on Tuesday.

Udhagamandalam: Under the aegis of the Public Awareness Association of Udhagamandalam, World Water Day was observed at the Crescent School here on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, the Secretary of the association, G.Janardhanan stressed the need to make water management a movement.

Private water sellers

Stating that every family should become part of the movement, he said that exploitation of ground water by private water sellers should be stopped.

He cautioned that if the practice is not banned the consequences would be regrettable.

The practice of harvesting rain water should be promoted.

Monsoon dependent

Pointing out that the Nilgiris is dependent on the South and North East monsoons for improving the storage position in its drinking water reservoirs, he said that a balance should be struck between conservation and consumption.

In many countries the water scarcity is acute.

The Correspondent, Crescent School, Umar Farook who presided, said that only by being eco-friendly can the people avert a water crisis.

Adverting to a theory that water shortage will trigger the next World War, he pointed out it was rapidly gaining ground on account of the growing water-related problems.

The Managing Trustee, Nilgiris Environment and Cultural Service Trust V.Sivadass said that to a significant extent, development of Tamil Naduis dependent on the water sources in the Nilgiris.

Ecological balance

The ecological balance of the district should be maintained at all costs. A class nine student Darshana also spoke.

Students formed a human chain to mark the occasion.
