BANGALORE: After much procrastination, former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said that he would not contest the by-elections to the Legislative Assembly from Channapatna constituency. The Janata Dal (S) will instead field party worker Sim Lim Nagaraju from the constituency for the by-polls scheduled to be held on April 9. Mr. Kumaraswamy announced his “final” decision to stay away from the fray while speaking to reporters in Bangalore. His decision comes after many flip-flops since Sunday when he told the party workers that he would contest the polls as per their desire only to retrace his steps the next afternoon. Hours later, on Monday evening, Mr. Kumaraswamy was again assuring his adamant party workers that he would enter the poll fray from Channapatna. But, on Tuesday evening, Mr. Kumaraswamy cited BJP State unit president K.S. Eshwarappa's remarks that the Janata Dal (S) had no candidate outside the family of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to contest the polls. “The Janata Dal (S) will now be fielding an ordinary party worker,” he said. Sim Lim Nagaraju will file his nomination papers for the by-polls on Wednesday.
