‘Kanchilda Bale' to hit screens on Friday

Special Correspondent

Charitra Hegde playing ‘Kanchiltha Bale' Tulu film.

MANGALORE: A new Tulu movie Kanchilda Baale (loosely translated blessed girl) will hit the screens on Friday.

Featuring 11-year-old Charitra Hegde of Brahmavar in Udupi in the key role, the film produced and directed by Kumbra Raghunath Rai (the maker of Tulu film Maaribale which has won the best regional film award), will be released simultaneously in Puttur, Udupi and Mangalore.

A film showing conflict between superstitions and beliefs of people highlights the bhootharadhane (spirit worship) of the region and is shot in Barkuru, Vandarumane, Manipal, Badadi, Surala Palace and other places around Udupi.

Shot in 75 days with actors from Tulu-speaking areas, the story is about a couple who have settled in California. The grandmother of their child believes that the girl is born because of her prayers to the local spirit shrine back here. But the girl's father dismisses this as superstition which leads to many emotional sequences that ultimately lead him to perform the bidding of the girl's grandmother.

Mr. Rai described the movie at a press conference on Tuesday as commercial-cum-art film and sought people's support.

Well-known theatre actor Navin D. Padil, who plays the role of a temple priest, said he was happy to have portrayed the kind of scenes a half-bred priest can create and embarrass people. He said more Tulu films would be produced only if people watch them in theatres. The lyrics are by well-known Tulu theatre person Vijayakumar Kodialbail. The music for the lone song highlighting the culture of the region is scored by “Topstar” Renu.

Based on story and screenplay by Krishnappa Uppuru, the film features actor Sai Krishna in a role. Its duration is 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Mr. Rai said Charitra, daughter of a businessman, has got a chance to work in two Kannada films after she acted in Kanchilda Baale. One of the two films had been shot, he added.
