TAMBARAM: A 32-year-old autorickshaw driver was hacked to death by a four-member gang near Tambaram Sanatorium railway station on Tuesday.

P. Anbazhagan, the victim, was done to death by the gangsters while he was returning in his autorickshaw. According to Chennai Suburban Police officials, Anbazhagan was a resident of Ramakrishnapuram, East Tambaram and living with his wife and two children.

He would be stationed in the autorickshaw stand opposite Varadharaja Theatre. On Tuesday morning, he dropped a passenger near the railway station and was returning to the stand, when the gang intercepted and assaulted him under the road overbridge near the station. After suffering a few blows, Anbazhagan jumped out of the auto and tried to run for his life. He had managed to run a few paces on the service lane of the bridge when he was assaulted again and died after suffering a volley of blows. Chitlapakkam police visited the scene of crime and his body was shifted to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet for post-mortem.

The incident took place around 11 a.m. and sent shockwaves in Tambaram Sanatorium. Passers-by, shopkeepers and drivers of autos at the stand near the scene of crime were shocked. Separate crime teams were investigating the motive and tracking down the assailants, police said, adding that a couple of crime cases against Anbazhagan were registered at Chitlapakkam police station.
