Tirupur: Twenty filed their nomination papers as Independent candidates for the Assembly polls in the district, on Tuesday. Of them, 18 were filed in Tirupur North constituency and the rest in Kangeyam constituency. The nominations for the Tirupur North constituency were mobilised by the Tirupur Industrial Protection Committee (TIPC), which aims at fielding 1,000 candidates in the constituency to draw attention to the problems faced by the Tirupur dyeing fraternity. The rush for procuring nomination papers for Tirupur North constituency continued for the third successive day on Tuesday as 38 persons obtained Form 2B from the election officials at Tirupur taluk office. “With this, the total number of forms procured has gone up to 435,” official sources said. ‘Reconsider decision' C. Sivasami, MP, has called upon the Tirupur Industrial Protection Committee (TIPC) to reconsider its decision to field 1,000 candidates in Tirupur North Constituency. “Fielding a large number of candidates will put enormous pressure on election officials. An AIADMK Government will solve the crisis in a holistic manner,” he said. Mr. Sivasami said that it was only during Ms. Jayalalithaa's rule between 2001 and 2006, that the Tirupur cluster got its third water scheme that addressed the water needs of the dyeing industry to a great extent. “Moreover, the AIADMK has always been sympathetic to the problems encountered in the cluster which was evident from the fact that power cuts were virtually non-existent and the much-awaited apparel park became a reality during the previous AIADMK regime,” he said. Reacting to Mr. Sivasami's statement, the Committee president, R. Annadurai, said that at present, the forum had no idea of dropping their decision to field 1,000 candidates. “Promises made at the local level cannot be taken seriously and we feel that his offer had come because of the fear of getting the votes split or due to the possibility of postponement of elections in Tirupur North constituency,” he added.
