Chennai: Voters should use their mobile phones to take pictures and video footage of bribing politicians and submit them to the Election Commission of India, which could use the material as evidence to take action, Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said on Tuesday. Launching an audio message on the necessity for free and fair elections, he said that reports were pouring in thick and fast that money was being distributed ahead of elections. On the supply side, the EC has flying squads, and conducts inspections and raids. On the demand side, the perception was that people were ready to receive. “People will have to reject bribes. They can't sell five years of their future for some ‘biryani' or a bottle of liquor or a thousand rupees,” he said and asked voters to discreetly capture pictures of bribing politicians when they visited their homes or neighbourhood and send them to the EC. The Commission was taking anticipatory action to stop voter bribery. “It is a cat-and-mouse game. They come with new methods and we try to plug them,” he said, and sought more information from public about movement of politicians paying cash for votes. 40,000 cases filed Already, 40,000 cases have been filed for violation of model code of conduct. About 150 more battalions of Central forces will be deployed from April 1 in addition to the 50 battalions already present. Surveillance will be intensified in sensitive constituencies, he said. For the first time, the EC would distribute vote slips to the voters with part number, serial number, booth name and area and photograph, which could be used to cast vote in case the voters had no EPIC cards. Only the EC vote slips would be accepted and not those distributed by political parties, said P. Amudha, Additional CEO. Admitting that traders could have been affected as EC was strictly monitoring the flow of cash, Mr. Kumar said that efforts would be taken to streamline the process. The audio has been produced by Youth Exnora International, Hiphop Tamizha and Highfly Media Production House. According to a release, 62 nominations were filed on Tuesday with the highest in Tirupur district with 20 nominations. Tirupur North Assembly constituency has received 18 nominations, the highest among all constituencies. With this, totally 195 nominations have been filed so far. Of the recognised parties, 27 BJP candidates, 22 DMK candidates, 1 INC and 1 AIADMK candidates have filed nominations.
