HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam (PR) president K. Chiranjeevi has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to accord national project status to Polavaram and Pranahita-Chevella at the earliest. He made a similar request to Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh. Mr. Chiranjeevi called on the Prime Minister in Parliament and urged him to expedite the clearances for Polavaram. He also requested the Prime Minister not to cut the concessions and subsidies being extended to Andhra Pradesh. He also met several MPs of DMK in Parliament and discussed with them about his proposed election campaign for the Congress-DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Ramesh gave him an assurance that clearance would be given if the displaced people were given proper compensation. He was hopeful that the project would get the MoEF's clearance as a special relief and rehabilitation package was being implemented by the State government to those affected by the project. It would be beneficial to Telangana and Rayalaseema areas too as the demand on Krishna water would come down, he noted. The project will created new irrigation potential of 7.2 lakh acres, besides providing drinking water to 550 villages and another 25 tmcft water to industrial needs around Visakhapatnam. The project would also generate 960-MW power.
