Coffee growers demand better price for silver oak logs
Correspondent
CHIKMAGALUR: Coffee growers from Chikmagalur, Hassan and Kodagu districts staged a demonstration here on Wednesday to protest against the policies of saw mill owners who deduct 10 per cent of the volume of silver oak trees sold by the growers and divide the logs into A and B categories.
They took out a procession from Gavanahalli on the outskirts of Chikmagalur, where many saw mills were situated, to the district offices.
They carried banners and shouted slogans against the saw mill owners.
Memorandum
They presented a memorandum to Assistant Commissioner Dayanand who assured them that he would bring the matter to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner.
Some parties and organisations like Jaya Karnataka and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike supported the coffee growers. N.K. Pradeep, president of Karnataka Growers' Federation (KGF), and H.R. Lakshman Gowda, former president of KGF, participated in the protest.
