The military intervention by the U.S., France and Britain in Libya cannot be justified. Violence on this scale cannot be a solution and will surely lead to another Iraq. Many countries are rightly against any external intervention in Libya. But it seems the coalition has a different purpose to serve. Virendra Kumar Singh, New Delhi It looks like the coalition forces have interpreted the U.N. mandate of enforcing a “no-fly zone” in Libya as “no-one-except-them-flies” zone. Oil is the ultimate aim of the attacks. The very oil which was a blessing for West Asian countries has become a curse for them. It looks like “human” rights are the exclusive preserve of the U.S. and the West. B. Gurunath, Chennai The indiscriminate bombing of Libyan installations is extremely unfortunate, considering that civilian casualties are inevitable. Military action should be the last recourse — after all diplomatic and economic options have been fully explored. The resort to such extreme measures based on flimsy grounds exposes the ulterior motives of the western powers. Rahul Jain, New Delhi In any country where there is an uprising of the Libyan nature, the duty of the government is to step down rather than train its army and rogues against its own people, especially after governments in neighbouring countries have stepped down in similar situations. D. Subrahmanyam, Puducherry
