KOLKATA: Churchill Brothers downed local giant East Bengal 1-0 in a group ‘A' league encounter of the 115th IFA Shield football tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Wednesday. Bineesh Balan found the winner off a penalty at the half-hour mark to give Churchill full points and boost its chances of a semifinal berth. Churchill had more opportunities to increase its lead but the framework came in the way, once in each session. The first half saw Jeremy Karpeh's shot come off the upright in the eighth minute while Kayne Vincent, the Kiwi forward, saw his 66th minute shot bounce back off the crosspiece. The win took Churchill to six points and gave it a spot behind leader Southern Samity (seven). In a group ‘B' match played at the same venue, Pune FC downed local challenger Aryan Club by a solitary goal to brighten its semifinal hopes. Japanese forward Izumi Arata struck early in the first session for the Pune side. Pune, which lost its previous encounter against Mohun Bagan, has six points from three games.
