Nearly 20 prospective entrepreneurs spotted

R. Krishnamoorthy

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries' Association (TIDITSSIA) has made gradual progress in executing the STED (Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development) Project of the Department of Science and Technology in industrially backward Tiruvarur and Pudukottai districts.

The association through its project offices has identified nearly 20 prospective entrepreneurs in Pudukottai and 13 in Tiruvarur.

In Pudukottai district, the TIDITSSIA will be promoting entrepreneurship exclusively for women mostly in garment manufacturing, preparation of ready to eat food varieties with the famed Chettinad flavour, the TIDITSSIA president S. Sridharan said. As for Tiruvarur, where the number of registered small industries is less than 200 since Independence, food processing has been made the focus of entrepreneurship to derive maximum mileage of the dominance of agriculture. There was also scope for initiating projects for making imitation jewellery.

Youths in these districts are also being motivated to take up fabrication to cater to domestic demand, mostly in the construction sector.

The Project Director for Pudukottai S. Abdul Rashid, association secretary, and project director for Tiruvarur T. Raju Rebero, treasurer, have been visiting the project offices on a weekly basis to infuse momentum into the entrepreneurship initiative through holding meetings with bankers and officials of the District Industries' Centre and conducting motivation camps for prospective entrepreneurs.

Activities under the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) will be dovetailed into the STED initiative, Mr. Sridharan said.
