Fellowship for BPL doctoral students
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Students from below poverty line (BPL) families pursuing a doctoral degree in Bangalore University will receive fellowship under new regulations approved by the university's Academic Council on Wednesday.
The fellowship is among the many guidelines in the draft Ph.D. regulations governing doctoral degree programme of the university.
Quality of research
“The quality of the doctoral work has to be raised substantially and fellowship could help in this regard,” said Vice-chancellor N. Prabhu Dev, and suggested that the fellowship should be at least Rs. 5,000 a month.
These guidelines are being framed following a general direction to all the universities by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Among others, the guidelines have a provision subjecting all Ph.D. theses to plagiarism scrutiny software. Any candidate guilty of plagiarism or any kind of malpractice would penalised and punished by the university apart from cancellation of registration or withdrawal of the Ph.D. programme. The guide status of the research supervisor may also be withdrawn.
The draft regulation has also suggested an entrance test through a centralised system and that part-time candidates should work at least 90 days a year in the department of the research guide. An important provision is that all university teachers who are eligible to be guides should become one.
