Shortfall in grants hitting research in BU

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Research and development activities in Bangalore University are being adversely affected due to shortfall in government grants as the university is forced to turn to its internal resources to meet expenses, Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev said on Wednesday.

Presenting the university's budget estimates for 2011-2012 before the Academic Council here, he said the Government had released Rs. 46 crore to meet the salary, pension and guest lecture honorariums whereas the university anticipates expenditure of Rs. 74.81 crore.

The university had sent a proposal to the State Government to release Rs. 68.27 crore in this regard. “There is a shortfall of Rs. 22.27 crores, which comes to 32.6 per cent.” Its expenditure of the university will go up in 2011-2012 due to revised salaries following the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and increase in the number of examinations due to the semester system.

Deficit

The budget presented on Wednesday shows a deficit of Rs. 5.73 crore for the coming financial year. While the total receipts of the university are estimated to be Rs. 210.55 crore, expenditure is expected to be Rs. 216.28 crore.

“Efforts will be made to meet the deficit through government grants and efforts to mobilise additional resources,” he said. A decision will also be taken to enhance admission and examination fees after the committee constituted to look into the matter submits its report.
