Tirupur: A total of 47 nominations were filed by 42 nominees in the district for the Assembly polls on Wednesday.

Thirty-five nominees

Of them, 35 nominations of 33 nominees were received at Tirupur North constituency, one each was filed in Tirupur South and Palladam constituencies, three in Udumalpet constituency and seven nominations by four in Madathukulam constituency.

Prominent among those who had submitted their papers included the Minister for Highways and Minor Ports, M.P. Saminathan, for Madathukulam constituency, and the Tirupur MLA, C. Govindasamy, for Tirupur North constituency.

The BJP nominees for Madathukulam and Udumalpet, Vijayaraghavan and Viswanathan, respectively, also submitted their papers on the day. For the 4th consecutive day, large number of candidates grouped together by Tirupur Industrial Protection Committee (TIPC) to attract the attention of the country to the dyeing industry crisis in Tirupur cluster obtained the nomination papers as well as filed the papers.

The forum aimed to put 1,000 candidates in the fray.

However, the Tirupur Industrial Protection Committee campaign received a jolt as the Dyers Association of Tirupur (DAT) completely alienated it from the forum.

“They are fielding 1,000 candidates for a ‘political stunt' not for upholding the real causes of the dyeing unit owners,” DAT secretary K. Krishnan told reporters.
