CHENNAI: Two-year-old white tigress cub, Akansha, received her birthday gift in the form of adoption by State Bank of India at a function in Vandalur zoo on Wednesday.

The bank paid Rs 1.44 lakh towards the feed and maintenance of the tigress for a one year period under the adoption programme.

J. Chandrasekaran, Chief General Manager, SBI, said the main idea was to create awareness among children through adoption.

K.S.S.V.P. Reddy, Chief Conservator of Forests and Zoo Director, said the adoption programme was launched sometime ago.

Only in the recent time a campaign was stepped up to popularise the adoption programme.

The zoo has a total of seven white tigers, including the male tiger Bhishma and the tigress Anu.

Of the total, five have already been adopted. Actor Karthi adopted Namratha more than a year ago. This was followed by adoption of three cubs by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation. Now Akansha has been was adopted by the SBI.

Through the adoption of various animals, the zoo has earned Rs 22 lakh.

The many requests the zoo has received for adoption of animals are not just restricted to flagship species such as elephant, tiger, lion and leopard. People have showed keen interest in adopting even reptiles and birds. “The idea of adoption programme is not to generate revenue, but to create awareness among people, particularly children,” Mr Reddy added.
