ERODE: Probably hoping the stars would help them, 42 candidates from the district for the upcoming Assembly polls filed their nominations on Thursday, considered astrologically the best day during the nomination filing period of March 19 and 26 for new ventures.

As per the regional calendar, the day has many ‘muhurthams' or auspicious hours, especially before the start of ‘yamakandam' hours at 1.30 p.m.

So, there was a beeline to the District Collectorate for filing nominations, as against the last two days when nominations just about trickled in.

Even the candidates of the Dravidian parties, famous for their agnostic beliefs, were seen wanting to take advantage of the day's merit. The candidates chose to file their papers between 11 a.m and 1.30 p.m.

From 1.30 p.m. till 3 p.m., time turned inauspicious as per the charts, being known as ‘yamakandam'.

The 42 candidates filed their papers to contest in the eight assembly segments in the district–Erode East, Erode West, Perundurai, Modakurichi, Bhavani, Bhavanisagar, Gobichettipalayam and Anthiyur.

They also include dummy candidates of major political parties. Key contestants in the district, K.A. Sengottaiyan (AIADMK), S. Muthusamy (DMK), and R.M. Palanisamy (Congress) have submitted their papers.

Mr. Sengottaiyan came to Gobichettipalayam Revenue Divisional Office along with his supporters in a colourful procession to submit his papers.

Mr. Muthusamy filed his papers at the Assistant Returning Officer at the Erode Corporation.

K.V. Ramalingam, who is contesting in Erode West segment on an AIADMK ticket, filed his papers at the Erode Revenue Divisional Office. Congress nominee for Modakurichi segment, R.M. Palanisamy, AIADMK's P.G. Narayanan (Bhavani), and DMDK nominee V.Chandrakumar (Erode East) filed their nominations at the District Collectorate.

Out of the nominations, seven were filed by independent, election officials here said.
