Aim is to get better prices for quality products Need for better inboard handling of tuna KOCHI: The Kerala State Cooperative Federation for Fisheries Development Ltd. (Matsyafed) has set up ‘Tuna terminal,' a facility for the export of value-added tuna products, at an investment of Rs.12.5 crore. The facility, set up with assistance from the Marine Products Export Development Authority, is exporting ‘fresh chilled tuna' to countries including Japan, France, Spain and the U.S. (These countries use Indian tuna, exported through Matsyafed, for Sashimi and Sushi preparations). Matsyafed is also exporting frozen tuna to France, Bulgaria, Singapore, Iran, Thailand, Japan and South Africa, sources said. The country gains foreign exchange to the tune of $6-14 per kg depending on the grade of tuna exported. Better value This results in better value-realisation for fishermen. (The earlier value was between Rs.90 and 140 a kg). The Tuna terminal' aims at getting better prices to fisherman by supplying quality fish. Tuna exported for ‘canning grade' is priced between $1.5 and 2.5 a kg. Only less than 0.5 per cent of the total landing quality can be used for ‘chilled fish export,' sources said. The onboard handling should be improved to get sufficient quantity of tuna, sources said.
