Allegedly masterminded inter-State bank robbery racket KOLKATA: An undertrial, who is alleged to have masterminded an inter-State bank robbery racket, managed to flee from police custody at Patna station on Thursday while being brought back to the city by Kolkata police sleuths. According to city police Joint Commissioner (Headquarters) Jawed Shamim, Umesh Prasad was lodged at the Presidency correctional home here after being charged with cheating. “He was wanted in Bihar in connection with several bank robbery cases and was being taken to Danapur in Bihar for being produced before a court there. While being brought back by train, he managed to give the four policemen escorting him a slip at Patna station,” Mr. Shamim said. Pointing out that an inquiry has already been initiated in the case, he added that disciplinary action will be taken against the escorting policemen if they are found lax in their duty. Meanwhile, a search operation has started to trace Mr. Prasad and the Bihar police have also been put on alert about the incident.
