State records increase in food production in 2010-11

It received Rs. 251 cr. for the scheme last fiscal

Bangalore: With the agricultural sector showing signs of recovery in Karnataka, the Centre is expected to sanction Rs. 400 crore under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) for re-orienting strategies in agricultural and allied sectors in 2011-12.

Subhash Garg, Joint Secretary, RKVY, who visited the State on Thursday, has been reviewing the progress achieved by the farm sector under the scheme, which envisages increase in public investment in the sector to achieve 4 per cent growth rate at the end of the 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-12).

Mr. Garg, who represents the Centre in the State-level Sanctioning Committee, would review the implementation of various schemes under the RKVY with top officials of the Government, officials in the Agriculture Department told The Hindu on Thursday.

Unlike the previous years, the State has recorded increase in food production in 2010-11.

During the year 2010-11, foodgrains production in the State increased at a rate of more than 14 per cent over last year's production. This increase was mainly led by increase in yield rate as the area increase during the year was only 2.9 per cent.

The production of foodgrains increased from less than 10 million tonnes in 2009-10 to above 12.5 million tonnes in the current year. The production of cereals and pulses touched 111.09 lakh tonnes and 14.69 lakh tonnes, respectively, in 2010-11, officials said.

The State had received Rs. 251.03 crore for the scheme in 2010-11, officials said.
