Sachin declines honorary doctorate of Mysore varsity
Staff Correspondent
MYSORE: Thanking the University of Mysore for proposing his name for honorary doctorate at its annual convocation here on April 10, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has, however, declined to accept the honour, according to the university.
Confirming this to The Hindu, university Registrar P.S. Nayak said Mr. Tendulkar's wife, Anjali Tendulkar, had written to the university recently on her husband's behalf.
“I was told at the Syndicate meeting here that Dr. Anjali had written a letter to the university on Sachin's behalf. The meeting was told that Sachin is not accepting the honorary doctorate since he is active in cricket. However, Sachin has thanked the university for the honour,” Prof. Nayak said. Prof. Nayak also clarified that Mr. Tendulkar had not rejected the honour.
Criticised
The university's move to confer honorary doctorate this year on the late Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, founder of the university, came in for criticism as his admirers here felt that a university degree would devalue his stature as a humanitarian and a generous king of Mysore, whose contribution to the State was immense.
