Students' innovation comes to the fore at two-day exhibition of projects
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Students' innovation came to the fore during an exhibition of projects at ‘Technovation'11', a two-day project exhibition by students of Sathyabama University in Sholinganallur, which began on Thursday
“Innovation need not happen only in huge laboratories among experienced people. It can happen even in a small workplace, in a classroom and in the college lab,” said Jagannath Bharadwaj, Director for Insurance Practice, Cognizant Technology Solutions. Students had been working during the last few months using basic materials to create innovative gadgets that can help the physically challenged move around easily: a mini-motorcycle running on an air-powered engine and a bicycle that needs no pedalling.
Mr. Bharadwaj, an engineering student from Coimbatore, recalled how he took part in a similar symposium at Sathyabama University more than a decade ago.
“I was still a student then. I was part of a team that created a project on Neural Networks and so it makes me feel nostalgic to come back to this institution,” he said. Jeppiaar, Founder and Chancellor of the private university and Mr. Bharadwaj had a look at the exhibits on display and told The Hindu that many of the models could work outside with some modifications. The cost factor too had to be considered, he added.
Mr. Jeppiaar said he was impressed with Helping Hand, designed similar to a wheelchair that could be operated by the rider by using his legs. Three final-year students of Mechanical and Production Engineering G.Prithvikanth, Rohit Kumar Ranjan and Sai Sashank Madderi had designed it. The Hindu is the media partner for the event.
