Delhi to observe one-hour power switch-off
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Delhi will do its bit for energy conservation by switching off the lights for an hour on Saturday. As part of the “Earth Hour” initiative that will be observed by billions of people in over 6,000 cities in over 130 countries across the world, Delhiites too will switch off their electrical appliances and lights for one hour starting 8-30 p.m.
“Earth Hour” is an annual international event created by the WWF to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. To promote the initiative power distribution companies BRPL and BYPL are sending SMSes to over 10 lakh customers twice, screening WWF “Earth Hour” documentary during RWA meetings, putting up posters at offices and residential areas.
“It is pertinent to note that Delhiites not only take the lead in per capita power consumption (1,615 unit, which is double the national average), but also take the lead in saving electricity during Earth Hour,” said a BSES spokesperson.
