Several groups protest against attack on journalists

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Various organisations staged a protest in Hubli and Dharwad on Friday, condemning the attack on presspersons at Gungaragatti village, near Dharwad, on Thursday.

Protesters, including advocates and seers, staged a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner's office in Dharwad, demanding action against the Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) and forest personnel who attacked presspersons at the Forest Training Centre at Gungaragatti.

It might be recalled that a complaint and a counter-complaint had been registered in this regard.

While the presspersons registered a complaint following an attack on them when they went to the village after a complaint of harassment by a trainee, the Assistant Conservator of Forest, Virupakshaiah, filed a counter-complaint alleging that the presspersons and others accompanying them had attacked him.

Memorandum

Meanwhile, members and office-bearers of the Dharwad Media Club submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner seeking his intervention in getting action initiated against those responsible for the attack on the presspersons.

In Hubli, the Dharwad District Union of Working Journalists held an emergency meeting of its executive committee in the wake of Thursday's attack.

The meeting resolved to demand the ACF's suspension and filing of a criminal case against him, besides immediate withdrawal of the false complaint filed against the journalists.
