BDL signs largest defence contract

HYDERABAD: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a contract with the Indian Army for Akash Surface-to-air Missiles (SAM) for approximately Rs.14,000 cr.

This is the highest value contract placed by the Indian Army to date, the Chairman and Managing Director, BDL, Maj Gen Ravi Khetarpal said in a press release here. The company had recently received an order for the Air Force version of Akash SAM for over Rs. 1,000 crore. The Akash SAM has been developed by DRDO as a part of the integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and has a range of 25 kilometres. It can shoot down aircraft, helicopters and UAVs travelling at speeds up to 700 m a second in all weather conditions.
