Chandigarh: Alarmed at the rise of dog-bite incidents, the Punjab Assembly on Saturday decided to constitute a joint committee of the House to take up the matter of stray dogs. “A committee of the Vidhan Sabha will be set up to find out ways and means to control the menace,” Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon assured the Assembly. Earlier, during Zero Hour, Ajit Inder Singh Mofar drew the attention of the House to the rise in incidents of dog-bite in the State. Cabinet Ministers Balbir Singh Bath and Gulzar Singh Ranike too expressed concern over it. Meanwhile, Jagdish Raj Sawhney of the BJP sought an immediate ban on use of polythene bags in the State as they block sewers. Agreeing with the MLA, the Speaker said he too was in favour of banning the use of polythene bags in the State. He directed Local Government Minister Manoranjan Kalia to ensure a ban on use of polythene bags. The Minister, however, tried to pass the buck saying the matter falls under the ambit of the Pollution Control Board. At this, the Speaker snubbed the Minister telling him that the Board also comes under the government. On the issue of a spate of road accidents in the State raised by Congress member Sukhpal Singh Khaira, the Speaker said, “It's a serious matter...I will take some decision on it within a week.” - PTI
