Bidar: The State Government will issue guidelines to policemen on how to deal with farmers, students, Dalits and women, Home Minister R Ashok said here on Saturday. The Minister said that the police lathi charge on farmers and women in Koppal on Friday was “wrong”. “We will see that such incidents do not recur,” he said. “These are sensitive issues and our (police) personnel should know how to deal with them. They should act with restraint under pressure. We will frame relevant guidelines and issue orders to each police station to follow them strictly,” Mr. Ashok told presspersons here on Saturday. He was here to lay the foundation stone for rural bus stands in Aurad taluk. Later, he said that the police department had taken stringent steps against cricket betting. “We found that betting was rampant in Bangalore and other cities. We came to know that nearly Rs. 100 crore is put on each match. I have issued written orders to curb this menace. This led to the arrest of 30 people in various districts and the police have seized lakhs of rupees,” Mr. Ashok said. He also said that the BJP Government had taken several measures to reform police administration. “We have begun the process of promoting constables and head constables. We have also created additional posts of assistant sub inspectors for day and night duties. Funds have been released to the police housing corporation for building and repairing offices and residential quarters of policemen. We have also sanctioned 25 new police stations across the state,” he said.
