DGP opens anti-human trafficking unit

Correspondent

Similar units will be opened at four more places in the State, he says

CUTTACK: Director General of Police (DGP) Manmohan Praharaj on Saturday inaugurated an Integrated Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (IAHTU) in the crime branch headquarters here on Saturday which will have sweeping powers to combat trafficking of persons in the State.

Human trafficking, particularly of women and children, for various purposes is rampant in the State and there is an urgent need to combat this organised crime as it seriously violated the basic Human Rights of the victims.

Inaugurating the unit, Director General of Police said the State police would now effectively deal with such organised crimes.

Soft targets

Women and young girls were the soft targets of the traffickers who were taking them to various places for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation, forced labour, forced marriage, domestic servitude, and adoption and begging, Manmohan Praharaj said.

The DGP also said at least four such units would be opened at Rourkela, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Balasore in the State soon.

The IAHTU was set up with an aim to prevent and detect trafficking of persons, said the crime branch IG Abhaya.

The IG said that the unit would also facilitate rescuing and rehabilitating the victims.

Although, the State government had decided to open these units way back in 2009 yet due to lack of efforts the proposal was in limbo all these days for there was no sanction of manpower.

However, Orissa police by redistribution of its existing manpower has decided to open these units.

All the five units would be made functional by the end of this month, sources said.
