HAL beats Canara Bank, wins title

BANGALORE: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Sports Club annexed the D.S. Murthy and V. Karunakaran memorial hockey tournament title with a 4-0 win over Canara Bank at the KSHA stadium here on Saturday.

In a final that did not rise up to expectations the Aircraftmen on a cruise mode from the very start struck at regular intervals through Ramesh (14th), Naseeruddin (27th and 45th) and Nanaiah (55th) to stub out the aspirations of the Bankmen. Naseeruddin was named `player of the final.

In the third place match, SAI defeated ASC by a 2-1 margin with M.G. Poonacha (26th) and M.B. Aiyappa (59th) sounding the boards. Tutti equalised for ASC in the 53rd minute.

Special awards:

Best Gooalkeeper: Sanjeeva (MEG Boys).

Best full back: Darshan (SAI).

Best midfielder: Nagaseeni (HAL).

Best forward: Sudhakar (DYSS).

Player of the tournament: Biken Singh (MEG Boys) .

MEG wins again

MEG posted its seventh win in the State ‘A' division basketball men's league championship for the Prof. N.C. Parappa Memorial trophy with a 76-58 win over Jayanagar SC at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts, here on Saturday.

The winners led 41-35 at half-time.

Jijin Joseph was in his elements for the Sappers with some astounding show under the offensive basket to tally 36 points, while Tinu Joseph and Lloyd Anthony chipped in effectively. For Jayanagar SC, Sujan played a lone hand.

In another match, former champion HASC finally tasted victory after seven rounds, albeit by a solitary point at 61-60 over Young Orions.

HASC trailed 25-28 at the halfway-stage, but picked momentum through former MEG player Sweeto Francis and the lanky Sachindra to turn the tables.

The results:

MEG 76 (Jijin Joseph 36, Tinu Joseph 14, Lloyd Anthony 10) bt JSC 58 (Sujan 22).

HASC 61 (Sweeto Francis 21, Sachindra 13) bt Young Orions 60 (Binoy 19, Anirudh 11).

Kanara Blues CA camp

The Kanara Blues CA, run by former State cricketer P.V. Shashikanth, will conduct its 12th summer weekend coaching camp at the Corporation ground, BTM Second Stage (behind Water Tank), Bangalore, from April 3 to May 15 for boys between the six and 17 years.

Inter-dist. football

The Mysore District football Association (MDFA), under the aegis of the KSFA, will conduct an inter-district tournament at the Chamundivihar football grounds, Mysore, from March 27 to April 5.

12 teams

Twelve district teams — Bangalore, Kolar, Mandya, Dharwad, Belgaum, Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga, Mysore, Bijapur, Davanagere, Udupi and Kodagu — will be seen in action.

The matches will be played on a knock-out-cum-league basis.

The top two teams in the semifinal league will play the finals slated for April 5.
