Raising slogans:Activists of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha taking out a rally in Shimoga Shimoga: Activists of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) staged a protest here on Saturday condemning the “atrocity” of police personnel on farmers in Koppal. The police had ruthlessly caned the farmers who were staging a protest condemning the delay in releasing remuneration for work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Even women and aged persons were also mercilessly beaten up by the police, the protesters alleged. Police “atrocity” on farmers had increased after the BJP came to power in the State, they said. Referring to the Haveri firing case and handcuffing the farmers who were protesting against land acquisition in Davangere, they demanded that Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa apologise to farmers. KRRS leader H.C. Basavarajappa said that police action on peaceful protesters amounted to violation of human rights. He demanded that the Government release the arrested farmers and withdraw cases booked against them.
