MLAs may get a big raise soon

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Amenities Committee of Legislature has proposed a hike in the salaries and allowances of MLAs and MLCs to Rs.80,000 a month, more than double of what they are presently entitled to.

According to sources, proposals have been sent to the government to raise the salary of the MLAs from Rs.5,000 to Rs.15,000.

Similarly, a recommendation has been made to enhance the monthly allowance from Rs.31,800 to Rs.65,000.

In addition, the pension of former legislators is expected to be increased to a minimum of Rs.15,000 depending on the number of terms served. The pension they are getting now is Rs.6,000.

Frequent boycotts

The proposal comes at a time when the budget session of the Assembly was marked by frequent boycotts for days at a stretch by dozens of legislators for various political causes.

The hike is expected to cover all the 295 MLAs including Nominated MLA in the Assembly and 90 members in the Legislative Council.
