Atchuta sizzles

VISAKHAPATNAM: Off-spinner S. Atchuta Rao (six for 17) set Vizag Veterans on course to a 10-wicket win over The Hindu in a first round match of the 18th The Hindu trophy annual prize money cricket tournament here on Saturday.

Atchuta Rao and G. Srikanth (two for none) bowled out The Hindu for 59 for which captain Sumit Bhattacharjee made 20. Veterans' openers G. Vinod Kumar (31, 4x6) and A. Sunanda (16, 4x1, 6x1) scored the required runs in quick time.

The teams were introduced to former Ranji player and administrator of the stadium B.J.J. Raju.

The VDCA Vice-President, P.R. Narayanaswami, secretary and former Test umpire K. Parthasaradhi, The Hindu's Regional General Manager, T.V. Suresh, and the Chief of Bureau, B. Prabhakkar Sharma, were present.

In another match at the Zinc Stadium, Visakhapatnam CC defeated HPCL by 28 runs after making 252.

The Hindu 58 in 28.2 overs (S. Atchuta Rao six for 17) lost to Vizag Veterans 59 for no loss in 8.2 overs (G. Vinod Kumar 31).

Visakhapatnam CC 252 in 40.3 overs (Appanna Reddy 81, Prabhakar Reddy 66, Pydi Reddy 42, P. Venkatapathi Raju three for 50) bt H.P.C.L. 224 in 40.4 overs (Dheeraj 64, P.V. Sanjay Kumar 30, P. Venkatapahti Raju 28, R. Atchuta Rao three for 33, Tata Reddy three for 48).
