Mali and Janeshwori corner glory

Sports Reporter

Bangalore: Chandrakant Mali added another gold to the Services Sports Control Board's burgeoning kitty in the National weightlifting championships with a fine performance in the men's 94kg event here on Saturday. The 23-year-old from Kolhapur lifted a total of 315kg (141, 174) to finish ahead of Kerala's M. Syamlal (140, 172, 312) and Jharkhand's Manjit Singh (145, 160, 305).

Although National-Games-gold-medallist Manjit led Mali 145-141 after the snatch, the former was relegated to third place after a relatively poor outing in the clean and jerk, with Mali's 174 handing him an overall win by 3kg over Syamlal.

Mali, a gold-medallist from the National Games, but in the 85kg event, moved up a class here to clear the way for teammate L.B. Singh, thus delivering Services two golds in place of one.

Strategy

Coach Harnam Singh, who was in-charge of the National side during the Commonwealth and Asian Games, said the move was never a risk despite the presence of Manjit.

A. Janeshwori Devi of Bihar romped home in the women's 75kg with a total lift of 190 (86, 104). Behind her were Manipur's K. Pramila Devi (80, 102, 182) and Punjab's Pardeep Kaur (70, 91, 161).

The results: Men: 94kg: 1. Chandrakant Mali (SSCB) (snatch 141, clean and jerk 174, total 315); 2. M. Syamlal (Ker) (140, 172, 312); 3. Manjit Singh (Jha) (145, 160, 305).

85kg: 1. L.B. Singh (SSCB) (131, 167, 298); 2. Santosh Kumar (Pun) (126, 167, 293); 3. K. Hara Gopal (IWLF) (125, 163, 288).
