Ashvarya moves up

NEW DELHI: Ashvarya Shrivastava, the sixth seed, outclassed qualifier He Sirui of China 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

Ashvarya dictated terms throughout, breaking the big-serving Chinese at will. Though her serve lacked sting, the Indian stroked well to save a clutch of breakpoints against an opponent who was consistently erratic.

In doubles, top-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi and Poojashree Venkatesh were beaten by Anja Prislan of Slovenia and Kyra Shroff. The second and third seeds, too, were also shown the door.
