Case against freebies in Madras HC

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the Election Commission of India to restrain political parties from advertising their promises to distribute freebies such as fans, mixer grinders and laptops if they were elected to power.

The petition filed by the managing trustee of an NGO also sought for a direction to the Election Commission to frame a permanent scheme to prevent political parties, across the country, from making such kind of promises in the elections to be held in the future.

The petitioner claimed that promising freebies amounted to bribing the voters. He also pointed out that such freebies were to be given not from party funds but from the public exchequer.
