BERHAMPUR: Homage was paid to Saheed Laxman Nayak in the city on Tuesday to mark his 69th martyrdom day. He was a great tribal civil rights activist of undivided Koraput district during the British era. He was falsely implicated in a case by the British and sentenced to death. He was hanged at the age of 43 in the Berhampur circle jail on March 29, 1943. People paid floral tributes at the cell where he was kept before his hanging. Officials and councillors of the Berhampur municipality were present at the jail to pay homage. They included Berhampur Sub-Collector Ajit Mishra, mayor Siba Shankar Das, and MLA RCC Patnaik. A meeting was organised at the place in memory of the martyr. The statue of the martyr at Saheed Laxman Nayak High School was also garlanded by dignitaries. Activists of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) held a memorial meeting and blood donation camp at Saheed Laxman Nayak community hall to pay homage to the martyr. The meeting was inaugurated by trade union leader Ram Chandra Nayak. In the morning they paid floral tributes to the martyr at his statue on the jail premises. Members of the People's Trust paid tributes to him. Member Ali Kishore Patnaik urged the State government to take steps to erect a statue of Laxman Nayak in the city.
