ANCHETTI (KRISHNAGIRI): Alert villagers on Monday night seized 11,520 sachets of liquor that was being transported in a van and a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Lakshmipuram Road and handed over the same to the police.

The drivers of the vehicles including the president of the Thakkatti panchayat, P. Siva Nanje Goud, escaped under cover of darkness.

Mobile phones

The villagers have handed over to the police two mobile phones (numbers 9008142384 and 9786314664) they got from the vehicles. The first number is believed to be belonging to Mr. Goud.

Villagers alleged that the police arrived at the scene only after two hours.

The Anchetti police have registered cases against Mr. Goud and Y. Prakash, the DMK candidate in Thalli Assembly constituency under sections 171 E & C, 324, 323 of IPC, 4 (1) (a) read with R/W 4 (1) (A) of Tamil Nadu Prohibition and Enforcement Act.

P. Palani, husband of P. Nanjammal, Councillor of Ward 24, said he along with the villagers intercepted the vehicles at around 11.30 p.m. while they were returning from a hospital. Immediately the persons inside the vehicles ran away after biting two villagers, he said.

As police did not turn up for more than two hours, a senior journalist from Krishnagiri brought this to the notice of the District Election Officer V. Arun Roy, who in turn instructed the police to take immediate action.

Then Inspectors Sivakumar (Denkanikottai) and P.M. Thangavel (Royakottai) rushed to the spot.
