Spotlight on Tagore at Bahuroopi this year

Theatre fest begins at the Rangayana complex on April 6


MYSORE: Bahuroopi, the national theatre festival, will begin at the Rangayana complex on April 6.

The theme of the five-day festival is ‘Gurudeva-150' to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

The Rangayana branch at Dharwad will also host the festival from April 7 to 11.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Rangayana director Lingadevaru Halemane said that theatre personality and actor Amol Palekar would inaugurate the festival at 5 p.m. at Vanaranga.

Minister for Kannada and Culture Govind Karjol will preside and Minister in-charge of Mysore district S.A. Ramdas will release a CD of the play Malegalalli Madhumagalu, which was staged last year. Director of Kannada and Culture Manu Baligar will release a book on Rangayana's journey.

As part of the festival, Secretary, Kannada and Culture, Ramesh Zalki will inaugurate an exhibition on Tagore at the Suchitra Art Gallery at Kalamandira. Deputy Commissioner Harsh Gupta will inaugurate a book exhibition outside Kalamandira. Chalanachitra Akademi chairman T.S. Nagabharana will inaugurate a film festival based on the works of Tagore at Sriranga. Chandrakantha Kusnoor's paintings on Tagore will be showcased at Lankesh Gallery at Rangayana.

Seminar

Dr. Halemane said the Bahuroopi national seminar will be held at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) here on April 8. Jnanpith award-winner U.R. Ananthamurthy will inaugurate the seminar. Udai Narayana Singh, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Vishwabharathi; and director, Rabindra Bhavan Shantineketan, West Bengal, will speak on ‘Tagore's ideas on fine arts' and Samyukta Dasagupa, head, Fine Arts, Kolkata University, will speak on ‘Tagore's writings in English'.

On the same day, Rajendra Chenni of the English Department, Kuvempu University, will speak on ‘Tagore fiction' while history professor from Shantineketan, Sandeep Basu Sarbhadhikari, will speak on ‘Tagore and the Swadeshi movement'.

On April 9, K. Shiva Reddy of Kannada University, Hampi, will speak on ‘Kannadadalli Tagore' and Srinivasa Sutrave of Davangere will share his experience of translating Tagore's plays.

The CIIL is supporting the national seminar.

Poetry recitation

Tagore's poems will be recited at a programme at CIIL on April 9 at 2.30 p.m. The programme is being held in association with the Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

M.R.C. Rangarajan of Bangalore, Ramanath Bhat of Mysore, Mr. Baligar of Bangalore, Naveena Halemane of Tumkur, Mahesh Harave of Mysore and Jana Tejashri of Hassan will participate.

Noted litterateur C.P. Krishna Kumar will preside.

Dr. Ananthamurthy will deliver the valedictory address on April 10 at 5 p.m. at Vanaranga.

Dr. Halemane said that plays would be staged daily at three venues (see graphic). Yakshagana and folk performances would also be staged daily.

Tickets

Tickets for the plays, which are priced at Rs. 30, will go on sale from April 4.

Dr. Halemane said that Rs. 33 lakh had been released to conduct the festival and funds were also expected from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. “We need about Rs. 40 lakh,” he said.

Nirmala Mathapathi, deputy director, Rangayana, was present.
