Namakkal: Villagers and locals clapped their hands while they had their glowing eyes glued to the first railway engine as it slowly rolled on the newly-laid Salem to Namakkal railway track and entered the district border on Wednesday.

The first trail-run of the train engine on the 53-km-long Salem to Namakkal broad gauge railway line started from the Salem junction on Monday.

The project that was initially sanctioned at an estimate Rs. 230 crore way back in the 1996-97 budget to lay the 85-km-long track between Salem and Karur was later revised to Rs. 740 crore at various stages following price hike of construction materials and other reasons.

A sum of Rs. 169 crore was allotted for the project during the last budget. Senior railway officials of the Southern Railways, who inspected the progress of the works in January this year, said that the work would be completed in two phases. They also made an assurance that the first phase between Salem and Namakkal would be completed before the end of March 2011 and the trial run on the track would be conducted in the same month.
