Court approves her plea for more time in India to complete her literary work

Susan Nathan says her

Kozhikode: The Kerala High Court has approved the appeal of Susan Nathan, Israeli writer and at present, a resident of the city, to continue in India for some more time to complete her literary work.

She had earlier been asked to leave the country as her visa expired on last September 16.

The order came in favour of Ms. Nathan last week as she challenged the quit order issued by the City Police Commissioner, stating that she had already moved applications to get the resident permit and continue till the renewal of her visa.

Ms. Nathan, through her legal adviser, Manjeri S. Sundar Raj, had also appealed to the court to consider her ill health and grant permission to continue treatment in Kerala.

Directive to police

The court, in its order, directed the police to settle her application for resident certificate within a month. It asked the Union government authorities to consider and pass appropriate orders as expeditiously as possible to process her visa application within two months.

The implementation of the quit notice, said the court verdict, will be subject to the orders to be passed as aforesaid.

Ms. Nathan, 62, had won fame with her book Other Side of Israel, featuring the plight of residents in various Arab camps in Israel.

She says her wish is to live in India for five more years to finish the literary work and to complete treatment.

Appeal

She has already appealed to the authorities to consider the issue with a humanitarian approach as she is willing to abide by the rules of the country.

The writer has promised timely renewal of resident certificates and other documents to clear the legal formalities. She says the procedures will be easy with the cooperation of the authorities as her passport will expire only on April 21, 2019.
